The main focus is on the health of patients’ gums and how to prevent oral diseases such as gingivitis (gum disease). Hygienists will professionally clean the patient’s teeth, called ‘scaling and polishing’ to remove the hard deposits (calculus) that can form. A crucial part of the oral hygiene advice they offer is showing people the best way to keep their teeth free of plaque by demonstrating effective brushing techniques and interdental cleaning. They also give advice on diet and preventing dental decay.
Another treatment they can offer is stain removal (also known as AirFlow) on teeth that can build up over time from smoking, drinking red wine, tea, coffee etc.
When you go to visit our dental hygienist you will be given an initial score and assessment on the condition of your gums. Over the course of your treatment, each time you visit, these scores will be reassessed. You will then be able to see if your dental hygiene and oral healthcare routine is improving over time.
